The California grizzly bear (Ursus arctos californicus) is our state animal. This now-extinct grizzly bear subspecies once thrived throughout California and could grow to enormous size, sometimes up to 2,000 pounds. When explorers and fortune-seekers arrived in California at the turn of the 19th century, the formidable bear was deemed a dangerous nuisance. Over-hunted, grizzly populations plummeted rapidly, and in just over a century the mighty animal was gone. The last sighting of a California grizzly in the wild was in 1924.
